European carrier Austrian Airlines has introduced a premium, private check-in experience but at an upcharge.
Travelers flying from Vienna International Airport (VIE) with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, or SWISS can book this service for €99 (approximately $107) with a minimum 30-minute duration. Reservations must be made through an online form at least eight days before departure and are subject to availability.
“While the private check-in counter was previously reserved primarily for corporate clients, Austrian Airlines is now expanding this offer to all passengers due to high demand from the group travel segment,” the carrier shared in a statement. “This specialized service is now accessible to private individuals and can be conveniently booked through austrian.com.”
At the private check-in counter, an agent assists the group of travelers with obtaining their boarding passes and checking luggage. However, Austrian Airlines emphasizes the personalization aspect of this service, catering to special occasions like honeymoons, bachelor or bachelorette parties, or even family vacations. The check-in screen can display a custom logo or personal message of up to 66 characters, adding a customized touch to the experience.
Payment for the service is due at check-in, though the full amount will be charged even if travelers arrive late to the airport and are unable to make their time slot.
While Austrian Airlines may be the first commercial carrier to offer a private check-in counter as an upsell, there are many ways travelers can enhance their airport experience, from expedited security to lounge day passes.
For example, PS, a private terminal at major U.S. airports like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Los Angeles International (LAX), offers amenities like dedicated TSA checkpoints, a full-service bar, lounge access, and even direct transportation to the aircraft. Prices start around $1,000 per passenger, though memberships are available for frequent users of the service.
